Art

Spring 2025

Text and picture

What does it look like when two artworks – a textual and a visual – are not supposed to explain each other, do not belong together as parts of one whole, but nevertheless enter into a clear dialogue? In this project we investigate how two artworks from the same artistic practice can stand side by side. Not as versions of the same thing, but as two different ways of thinking, feeling and expressing oneself – with a common source.

The project is based on the individual student’s practice and the idea of coherence without fusion. It is about letting the works speak to and against each other. Like in an exhibition where two works by the same artist – perhaps created at different times, in different media – hang in the same room, and precisely because of that they begin to give each other meaning.

Based on a previous assignment on text as art, we work in the field between text and camera-based images: photography and video. The text as a visual work. The image without text. Going back to a previous assignment from a month before also shapes the understanding of a practice as something in a larger context, and not just about the work in front of you. It is an investigation of what it means to work in a practice. To repeat yourself and at the same time find new paths. To be true to an idea, a mood, a tone – but insist that works must stand independently. The project is an exercise in seeing one’s own practice from the outside, in creating connections and contrasts, in making room for complexity.
